One of the biggest problems with internet-native payments is not moving money onchain. It is making very small payments economically sane. As soon as every request, event, or API call has to become its own onchain transfer, two things happen fast:

Fees start to dominate the payment amount

Latency and operational overhead start to distort the product

Nanopayments combines x402 with Circle Gateway batched settlement to make very small USDC payments workable at high frequency. Instead of paying gas on every single payment, buyers fund a Gateway balance once, sign offchain payment authorizations, and let Gateway settle net positions in bulk onchain. Circle Gateway provides a unified crosschain balance, meaning agents can use your service from many supported chains.¹

This changes what is realistic to build.

A lot of the products being explored around Arc are naturally usage-based.

What the flow actually looks like

The buyer deposits USDC into a Gateway Wallet contract.

The buyer requests a paid resource from a seller.

The seller returns HTTP 402 payment instructions.

The buyer signs an EIP-3009 payment authorization offchain.

The buyer retries the request with the signed authorization.

The seller verifies the payment and serves the resource.

Gateway batches many authorizations together and settles them onchain.
